What to Expect at Your First Appointment
We know a first therapy visit can bring a mix of emotions—curiosity, hope, maybe a few nerves. Here’s a simple walkthrough so you know exactly what to expect when you visit our clinic.
Before your visit
1. Request an appointment through our website or by calling 585-910-2292. We’ll respond within 24–48 business hours to confirm your time.
2. Gather your paperwork. Bring your child’s insurance card, a photo ID, and any referral or prescription from your pediatrician (if applicable). If your child has had previous evaluations or relevant medical records, those are helpful too.
3. Fill out your consent forms. You will receive a link via email to complete Rise Above’s online consent forms.
4. Dress for play. Your child should wear comfortable, easy-to-move-in clothing. Think leggings, shorts, or soft pants—nothing too bulky or restrictive. Bare feet or socks are usually best for therapy.
During the evaluation
Your child’s first visit is an evaluation—a chance for our therapist to get to know your child, understand your concerns, and assess where they are developmentally.

Here’s what that looks like:
-
We’ll start by listening. We want to hear your observations, your questions, and your goals for your child.
-
Your therapist will observe and interact with your child through age-appropriate play and movement activities.
-
We’ll assess your child’s current abilities and identify areas where support can make the biggest difference.
What you'll walk away with
After the evaluation, your therapist will share initial findings with you and discuss a recommended plan of care. This includes how often therapy sessions are recommended, what goals you’ll be working toward together, and what you can start doing at home right away.
We’ll also coordinate evaluation notes with your child’s pediatrician and any other providers involved in their care, so everyone stays on the same page.
Common Questions From Parents

1
Do I need a referral to schedule an appointment?
It depends on your insurance plan. Some plans require a referral from your pediatrician, while others allow direct access. If you’re not sure, give us a call and we’ll help you figure it out.
2
How long is an evaluation?
Initial evaluations typically last 45–60 minutes. This gives us time to listen to your concerns, observe your child, and share our initial findings and recommendations.
3
How often will my child need therapy?
Frequency depends on your child’s individual needs. After the evaluation, your therapist will recommend a schedule—including frequency and duration of care—and you’ll discuss what works best for your family.
4
What ages do you work with?
We work with infants, children, and young adults. Whether your baby is a few weeks old or your teenager is recovering from a concussion, we’re here to help.
5
What if I’m not sure my child needs therapy?
That’s completely okay—and a great reason to reach out. We’re happy to talk through your observations and help you decide whether an evaluation makes sense. There’s no pressure, just support.
